BOOM AP3: Activist Print
BOOM Concept’s temporary public art program AP3 incorporates traditional public art techniques such as aerosol, brush painting, vinyl prints, screen printing, and wheat paste. Inspired by the history of silkscreen and print-based media used for agitational propaganda, AP3 presents the artist’s voice as a direct responder to social justice actions globally in high traffic areas. The program also fosters conversations through lectures, tours, and guided public art experiences to discuss topics featured in the public art installations.
BOOM Concepts Activist Print Paint Paste AP3 Temporary Public Art program was founded in 2015 through a collaboration with The Andy Warhol Museum and Artists Image Resource. The program began with Pittsburgh’s first commissioned #BlackLivesMatter mural by DS Kinsel. Activist Print’s then launched in 2016 and invited three Pittsburgh artists—Bekezela Mguni, Paradise Gray, and Alisha B. Wormsley—to create socially and politically inspired print work displayed on the Rosa Villa, a property owned by The Andy Warhol Museum. Since then, AP3 has produced over 25 temporary public and private art installations, showcasing a variety of styles and presentations. Partnering with organizations like PPG Paints, 1HOOD, The City of Pittsburgh, and Rivers of Steel, AP3 has provided diverse examples of public art, including a 75ft mural, a derby car, a community survey, and a free coloring book.
Participating artists receive stipends, documentation support, and production support to create the public art engagement. AP3 enables artists to respond to current events, support marginalized voices, and engage directly with society using commercial, media-based techniques. It provides a forum for discussion and action on social and political issues, strengthening relationships between arts institutions and local artists. The project aims to improve visual landscapes and increase the presence of diverse public art, offering high-traffic areas for artists to engage wide audiences.
