BOOM Universe Residency Program

BOOM Concepts provides artists with space to explore, learn, and create sustainable career strategies. We create environments and experiences that facilitate intentional exchanges of learning between collaborators. Supporting artists and artist collectives by serving as a cultural kitchen for the community has been a primary focus at BOOM Concepts since our founding in 2014.

We have found that the residency model is one of the best ways to support our fellow artists effectively. BOOM Concepts’ residency program, started in 2015, provides Pittsburgh-based artists with opportunities to engage large audiences through the Penn Avenue Arts Initiative’s monthly Unblurred Gallery Crawl. This program expanded in 2017 to invite national artists to Pittsburgh, fostering relationships with artist-led movements, organizations, and actions across the country.

In 2021, BOOM Concepts modified its in-house programming to better serve artists and creative entrepreneurs. We shifted from being a community rental space and artist program laboratory to offering three distinct programs under the BOOM Universe Residency Program. This program operates out of three sites, supporting local and visiting artists by providing free live/work spaces, stipends, access to supplies, skill-building opportunities, and peer-to-peer mentorship. These resources encourage rigorous self-led exploration and the development of a holistic practice.
