Bohemian Ossuary | DS Kinsel | Main Gallery
Pittsburgh-based cultural agitator and multidisciplinary artist DS Kinsel debuts Bohemian Ossuary, a powerful exhibition of paintings and sculptural totems created over the past five years. The work draws on funerary artifacts, ancestral iconography, and the artist’s meditation on the Latin phrase memento mori (“remember you must die”). Kinsel’s collection reflects on the spiritual and anatomical with a deep reverence for archiving, ritual, and remembrance. The exhibition explores abstracted anatomy, jujuism, and the amalgamation of identities, transforming the gallery into a symbolic ossuary, a sacred site of skeletal remains. The artist uses simple symbols and totemic forms to encode narratives, employing repeated strokes as incantations to conjure a resurrected community. The exhibition features over 50 new paintings by Kinsel that creates a visual space of hallowed ground, inviting viewers into a state of communal reflection. Kinsel will be collaborating with streetwear brand Dont Play Corp to release limited edition commemorative merchandise to further celebrate the exhibition and this body of work.
This exhibition is supported by the Exposure Artist Program of The Pittsburgh Foundation and BOOM Concepts.
