“The 10-year anniversary isn’t just a milestone; it’s a vision for a future where art thrives, communities flourish, and we all contribute to a lasting impact.” – BOOM Concepts co-founder DS Kinsel

March 2024 marks the 10th anniversary of BOOM Concepts operating in Pittsburgh’s Garfield neighborhood. In 2014, DS Kinsel and J Thomas Agnew, with the support of Rick Swartz of the Bloomfield Garfield Corporation and a historic collaborative effort between Justin Laing and Rob Stephany of The Heinz Endowments, established a home and cultural kitchen for artists across disciplines. Over the last decade, BOOM Concepts has been a studio space and creative hub, offering opportunities for both local and national artists, curators, makers, and neighbors.

To celebrate our decade of support to the community, BOOM Concepts is launching its first major fundraising campaign. We are asking the community for support! During this 12-month campaign, BOOM Concepts invites you to celebrate and reflect upon our history with a selection of fun-filled anniversary programming events. Each event will offer unique opportunities to support BOOM Concepts’ future goals.

The campaign identifies our needs in a three-pillar approach, providing you the opportunity to support our general operations, creative programming, and the ultimate goal of acquiring a FOREVER HOME in Garfield. By reaching our $700,000 goal with the support of our local, national, and global community, we will be able to sustain diverse, vibrant, and impactful Black-led arts existence and ensure BOOM Concepts continues to build its legacy.

BOOM Concept’s anniversary programming kicks off in March 2024 with a special BOOM Fundraising Social Hour at Emerald City (Floor 2) – 213 Smithfield Street Pgh PA 15222 on Wednesday, March 13th from 5P-8P (5P-6P Private Gathering), featuring artwork from DS Kinsel’s BRAIN BONE BLOOD collection, which was recently featured at Miami’s RedDot Art Fair during Miami Art Week 2023.

Next is the BOOM Unblurred Takeover on Friday, April 5th starting at 5P. During Unblurred, BOOM Concepts will host special on-site programming and curate multiple exhibitions along Penn Avenue during the monthly Unblurred: First Fridays on Penn Gallery Crawl. Artists that will be featured as exhibitors and participants include Charlese Dawson, Ivory Eddins, Jameelah Platt, Evangeline Mensah-Agyekum, DS Kinsel, Adam “FRH” Golden, Princess Jafar and more!

For 25 years between the 4800 and 5500 blocks of Penn Avenue neighbors have connected on the First Friday of each month to meet with artists and local business owners. Legacy residents, first-time visitors, and everyone in between are invited to visit Penn Avenue and enjoy the bustling creative energy of the business district – experiencing a mix of photography, dance, painting, sculpture, music, spoken word performances, gift shops, fashion, boutiques, pubs, and restaurants!

The BOOM Unblurred Takeover is happening in partnership with the Bloomfield Garfield Corporation, The Lab @ Silver Eye, The Opportunity Fund, Two Frays Brewery, Pedantic Arts, Artist Image Resource, The Maverick, Public Print House, VisitPITTSBURGH and more.
